What is a shadow, but a special kind of reflection?

David Hockney wrote, "... sometimes people don't see shadows... but I noticed these shadows and I knew it meant it was sunny." It's akin to the artist's attention to positive and negative space or the therapist's awareness of polarities - the same relationship of figure and ground that Arnie Beisser talked about as the basis for humor. Shadows can be subtle, but they are everywhere; you only need to open your eyes.

My passion for reflections led to more awareness of shadows and silhouettes. Have you seen the elation of a child discovering his shadow - the excitement, playfulness and sense of control? After I attended Ed Nevis' very moving memorial last weekend, I visited Rita Beisser, and then my high school friend, Chris, on Cape Ann. Strolling down the street of Rockport, we stopped at the Shalin Liu Performance Center. A young woman was playing the Steinway that had recently been purchased. It took my breath away.
